India has the highest number of children with developmental disabilities, with 11.5 million impacted. Despite a rise in professionals working to support these children and families, resources are limited, making engagement difficult. Nayi Disha, a Hyderabad-based nonprofit, aims to bridge this gap with a platform connecting families, professionals, and resources. Development logics was approached in March 2020 to enhance Nayi Disha’s website.
About the Client
Nayi Disha’s mission is to become a lifelong partner for families impacted by Autism and developmental disabilities. They needed to migrate their existing Drupal website to WordPress and structure content into Resources, Directory, Community, and Events categories for better searchability. They also required a Progressive Web App (PWA) for instant updates and user engagement.
Challenges and Requirements
1. Migration to WordPress
The primary requirement was to migrate the website to WordPress, as the existing platform was slow and unappealing.
2. Making the Content More Searchable
Nayi Disha‘s content was rich and varied but needed to be structured into four major categories for better searchability: Resources, Directory, Community, and Events.
3. Progressive Web App
A Progressive Web App (PWA) was also required to enable the website to provide instant updates and engage users better.
Our Approach
1. Website Migration
With a team of five, including a Project Manager, Team Lead, Quality Analyst, and two Developers, Development Logics embarked on an 18-month journey to migrate the website to WordPress. Collaborating closely with Nayi Disha, they kept them updated with the project’s progress each week.
2. Content Display and UI
The team worked on improving the user interface to enable the content to display uniformly across all browsers and devices, while the directories and events were locally synced based on the user’s location.
Advanced text-based search features, paywalls, and filters were added to enhance user experience.
3. Progressive Web App
Creating a PWA for the website involved building advanced caching capabilities to achieve a short loading time, making the website perform well even in spotty networks.
4. Registration and Payment Integration
The website includes separate registration modules for patient families and professionals, and seamless integration with the Razorpay payment gateway for the e-Donation Box feature.
Learnings
The project’s complex programming required added man-hours, but the end result was a complete turnaround from the client’s original website, greatly improving the user experience of its beneficiaries.
Conclusion
Development Logics helped Nayi Disha create a tech-enabled platform for developmentally disabled children and their families, demonstrating their commitment to creating a positive societal impact through innovative initiatives.
