Search Engine Optimization and Marketing has been the buzz word in the online marketing space for over a decade now. In 2016,what you can be sure about is that it is not going to change. However, the way SEO has been working has been evolving and it has reached a point where things are different than what they used to be.
1. Keyword Research
It is not going to be so much about the keywords now as it used to be. Search Engine Optimization, a couple of years back was about finding the right kind of words to fit into online content and getting people to “click”. These clicks don’t matter now because search engines are not ranking and indexing to show you on their results. They are concerned about the overall experience that your website gives you. The first tip or takeaway right now is to not clog the user experience with keyword flooding. Instead give them the experience that they are looking for when they visit you.
2. Size
Two years ago, a 200 word article was good enough. But articles and studies over the last year suggest that the average sizes of articles have increased and should be anywhere more than at least 500 words. Longer articles perform better in search results because there are more words and images to rank on the page. People are sharing longer articles on social media more, and linking to them and citing them more. Shorter articles do well sometimes, but on average, longer articles tend to perform better.
3. Graphic rich content
Spice up a post with a picture or two, put in some meta and alternate tags for images, ofcourse with prior SEO research. It is not the best practise some might argue but with the growth of instagram and images, graphic content is gaining more popularity and people sometimes want things shortened into an image.
4. Show up on mobile
Maximum people today are reading on their handheld device which makes it all the more important to ensure that your content is searchable on mobile and also the fact that your webpage is mobile friendly.
5. It is about your audience
A common sentiment shared now among the marketers is that they want their website to serve their audience better not just to show up as #1. In the past, it was about marketers trying to promote what they wanted people to see. Today it’s about delivering what people actually want to see that will give you an SEO ranking boost.
6. Local SEO is very important
This trend is only going stronger over the years. According to ‘Entrepreneur’, local SEO is growing and destined to flourish over the next year. As a marketer, you have to let Google know where you are located and what you are offering so that your chances of showing up on pages, especially in front of the relevant audience, increase. It is must to have your local pages which will include the name of your business, address etc.
